Snow Scope Probe Updates for Winter 2024/25

Over the last few years we’ve continuously been evolving the Snow Scope Probe - making it more accurate, reliable, durable, and easy to use. This year was no different, and we are excited to announce a completely redesigned collapsible probe section, firmware and calibration improvements, and some other durability improvements.

New Collapsible Pole and Standard Lengths

We’ve heard your feedback and are moving away from a standard 160cm length probe + screwed in extenders to a brand new design - standard 220cm and 300cm length collapsible poles. The big advantages are:

  • All probes will allow probing depths up to 220cm, with 300cm depths possible with the longer version.

  • No need to screw in extenders - all probe operations are a quick extension and collapse system.

  • the probe collapses to 43cm, fitting in a backpack much easier than the previous 53cm collapsed length. (fits very similarly to an avalanche rescue probe now)

  • increased durability and repairability of all parts

Improved Profile Algorithm and Calibration

As we collect more and more field data, we are continuously improving the sensor processing and profile algorithm to deliver more accurate data with reduced error rates. These changes are released in firmware updates and can be applied to all Snow Scope Probes - both new and old.

Additionally, we have built all new calibration equipment this season to improve our calibration accuracy and reduce depth error bias.

Durability Upgrades

As more and more Snow Scopes are deployed into the field each year, they are exposed to different field conditions and use cases, and we learn more and more about what can break them. While there haven’t been any major failure modes for the last few years, we’ve taken the rare and occasional failures seriously, and have addressed them with the upgrades to the probes this season. Of note are a redesigned force sensor tip installation process to more reliably secure the tips to the probes and the redesigned collapsible probe, which includes a stronger cord, durable 7075 Aluminum tubing with laser etching, and a focus on making all components repairable.
